On Sunday afternoon in Sarasota, Florida, a father was killed and his 9-year-old daughter critically injured while walking along the beach when a small plane crash landed just feet from the surf.
Ommy Irizarry, 36-years-old from Georgia, was pronounced dead shortly after the accident. Oceana Irizarry, his daughter, was airlifted to a children’s hospital and is listed in critical condition.
The small plane lost power which caused them to crash land on the beach. Around 2:45 p.m. the Venice airport received a distress call that the plane was unable to return to the airport. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash landing. The National Transportation and Safety Board is also headed to the site to investigate the accident.
The plane, a Piper Cherokee, landed with its nose pointed down, but did not sustain much damage.
