The nations largest automotive recall continues to grow as Honda announces the addition of 2.2 million more vehicles to the Takata airbag recall. Defective Takata airbags are responsible for at least 8 deaths and numerous injuries.
Following further investigation into the use of faulty Takata airbags, approximately 1.7 million Hondas and 500,000 Acura vehicles, Hondas luxury brand, were added to the recall. To date, Honda has recalled more vehicles than any other automobile manufacturer, with a total of 8.51 million vehicles.
The models added to the recall include:
- Acura vehicles:
- 2005-2012 Acura RL
- 2007- early 2016 Acura RDX
- 2009-2014 Acura TL
- 2010-2013 Acura ZDX
- 2013- early 2016 Acura ILX
- Honda vehicles:
- 2007-2011 Honda CR-V
- 2007-2014 Honda Ridgeline
- 2009-2014 Honda Fit
- 2010-2014 Honda FCX Clarity
- 2010-2014 Honda Insight
- 2011-2015 Honda CR-Z
Nationwide, the Takata airbag recall has come to include over 19 million vehicles manufactured by at least 10 automakers. The total could soon climb to 25 million vehicles.
Takata airbags have been recalled due to the potential to over-inflate on deployment, sending shrapnel at drivers and passengers inside the vehicles passenger compartment.
Completing Recall Repairs a Challenge
According to a Honda representative, only half the vehicles recalled prior to last weeks announcement have been repaired. The brand suspects completing recall repairs has been a challenge because many older models are involved, which have likely changed owners over the years. Honda is aggressively pursuing vehicle owners in efforts to notify them of the recall and safely repair the affected automobiles.
