In early 2014, GM recalled 2.6 million vehicles after admitting that the company had been aware of a defect in their ignition switches for over a decade. The defect caused the ignition switch to slip into the off position while the vehicle was running, which caused the vehicle to stall while disabling the breaks and airbags. GM spokesperson Alan Adler claims that the company later checked all if its models for the defect and had to recall an additional 10 million automobiles by the middle of 2014.
Kenneth Feinberg, the attorney charged with managing the victim compensation fund, told reporters that he received 4,342 claims, and only about 20 percent met the criteria for compensation. Of the remaining 3,499 claimants, which includes 24 families claiming wrongful death of a loved one, 453 have been given time to submit additional evidence such as auto repair records and hospital documentation.
By the end of March 2015, GM had spent $200 million on victim compensation; company officials expect that number to grow to about $600 million.
With hundreds of claims still needing additional documentation to be verified, the number of fatalities and injuries linked to GM’s faulty ignition switch could continue to climb. Claimants have until July 31 to submit the required paperwork.
