Early March 10th, two victims lost their lives after two tractor-trailers and a passenger vehicle collided on State Road 80. An additional victim sustained serious injuries in the devastating crash that led to a seven-hour shutdown of an eight-mile stretch of roadway.
A little after 4 a.m., a semi-truck traveling eastbound on State Road 80 in Belle Glade was struck by a Mazda that was attempting to turn onto the roadway. The Mazda was broadsided by the semi-truck on the driver’s side, and the semi-truck went over the grass median dividing the roadway into oncoming traffic, where it collided with another tractor-trailer.
The westbound tractor-trailer ran off the road and burst into flames. Although, the driver managed to escape before the cabin fire erupted, he was transported to a West Palm Beach medical center and is in serious condition.
The driver of the first semi-truck was killed in the accident; his trailer was rolled onto its roof while the truck’s cab was found lying on the driver’s side. The driver of the Mazda was also killed.
One of Many Deadly Crashes
This accident is far from the only serious crash that has occurred on this stretch of State Road 80. There have been more than 20 serious accidents in the area since 2015, and three of those have resulted in fatalities.
In 15 miles’ worth of roadway, there are only four roadway lights, and there are no traffic lights. Many of the intersecting roads are gravel roads, allowing access to farmland.
